Nasya Therapy: Complete Practitioner's Guide to Nasal Oil Administration

Nasya Therapy: Complete Practitioner's Guide to Nasal Oil Administration

What is Nasya Therapy?

Nasya is one of the five classical Panchkarma therapies in Ayurveda, involving the administration of medicated oils, herbal preparations, or powders through the nasal passages. The nose is considered the gateway to the brain and consciousness in Ayurvedic medicine — making Nasya one of the most direct routes for treating conditions of the head, neck, and nervous system.

Regular Nasya practice is indicated for a wide range of conditions and is also recommended as a daily preventive practice (Dinacharya) for maintaining nasal and brain health.

Types of Nasya

  • Pratimarsha Nasya — Daily preventive Nasya using 2 drops of plain sesame or medicated oil. Safe for daily self-practice.
  • Marsha Nasya — Therapeutic Nasya using 6–10 drops of medicated oil. Performed under practitioner supervision.
  • Navana Nasya — Cleansing Nasya using herbal decoctions. For Kapha conditions, sinus congestion, and headaches.
  • Avapida Nasya — Using expressed herbal juice. For acute conditions.
  • Dhumapana (Nasya) — Medicated smoke inhalation through the nose. For Kapha disorders and respiratory conditions.

Clinical Indications

Nasya therapy is indicated for:

  • Chronic sinusitis and nasal congestion
  • Migraines and chronic headaches
  • Cervical spondylosis and neck stiffness
  • Anxiety, stress, and mental fatigue
  • Hair loss and premature greying
  • Eye and ear disorders
  • Facial paralysis and neurological conditions
  • Allergic rhinitis

Equipment for Nasya Therapy

Proper patient positioning is critical for effective Nasya administration. The head must be tilted back at the correct angle to allow the oil to flow into the nasal passages and reach the sinuses.

Key equipment for clinical Nasya:

  • Nasya Pillow / Bolster — A specially designed pillow that positions the patient's head at the correct angle for nasal oil administration. Ensures consistent, comfortable positioning for every session.
  • Nasya Dropper / Pipette — For precise, measured administration of medicated oil.
  • Warm oil vessel — To maintain oil at the correct temperature (body temperature, 37–40°C) during administration.

Step-by-Step Nasya Procedure

  1. Pre-procedure preparation: Perform gentle facial massage (Abhyanga) and steam fomentation to open the nasal passages.
  2. Patient positioning: Have the patient lie supine with the head tilted back using a Nasya pillow. The nostrils should face upward.
  3. Oil preparation: Warm the medicated oil to body temperature. Select the oil based on the patient's condition and constitution.
  4. Administration: Instill the prescribed number of drops into each nostril alternately, while the patient breathes normally.
  5. Retention: Ask the patient to remain in position for 2–3 minutes, breathing through the mouth if needed.
  6. Post-procedure: Have the patient spit out any oil that drains into the throat. Gargle with warm water. Avoid cold air, cold food, and cold water for 1 hour.

Nasya as Daily Practice (Pratimarsha)

Beyond clinical treatment, Nasya is recommended as a daily morning practice in Ayurvedic Dinacharya (daily routine). Just 2 drops of plain sesame oil or Anu Taila in each nostril each morning:

  • Lubricates and protects the nasal passages
  • Improves mental clarity and focus
  • Prevents sinus congestion
  • Supports healthy hair and vision
  • Calms the nervous system
